HR Network West Wales: Domestic Abuse is Everyone's Business

Taking place on Thursday 27th February 2020 this event will be held at the recently renovated Plas Hyfryd Hotel, nestled in the boutique town of Narberth, Pembrokeshire. Location details can be found here.

As employers and HR representatives, we may be unaware that one or more of our employees is suffering domestic abuse. We may also think that, because we don’t hear about it, it is a rare phenomenon and not something we need to be concerned about. Unfortunately the reality is shown in Government statistics which confirm that 2.4 million people suffered some form of domestic abuse in the UK in the 12 months leading up to March 2019. Of those 75% were targeted at their workplace; and 70% of employers do not know how to respond to this type of abuse.

We are going to be joined by Christine Evans (Business Engagement Officer) and Ameila Baugh (Community Engagement Assistant) both from Cardiff Women’s Aid who are working with businesses across Wales trying to dispel the myths around domestic abuse. Their aim is to put employers at the heart of tackling domestic abuse by providing them with the tools to recognise the signs and play an active role in its prevention through the Everyone’s Business project.

Cardiff Women’s Aid have been challenging domestic abuse since 1974 and regularly work with other local domestic violence organisations throughout Wales, working collaboratively to see an end to domestic and sexual violence or abuse in our regions. We are very grateful to both Christine and Amy for giving us their time to educate us on this hidden topic.

The event will begin with networking and a light complimentary breakfast from 9am until 9.45am. We will then hear from Christine and Amy, giving us an insight in to what domestic abuse is, how it affects the workplace, some simple steps organisations can take to support someone going through domestic abuse, and tools they can offer to help organisations and individuals find information and support. This will be followed by a Q&A session and further networking from around 11am, with an anticipated finish time of 11.30am.

Attendance at this event is on a first come first served basis and is open exclusively to Redkite HR Package clients or members of HR Network West Wales. If you are interested in attending, but don't fall into either category, don't worry; it is quick and easy for you to become a part of our growing HR network.
